Q&A ~ Am 26 in a major international consulting firm. How do I take it to the next level?
Q&A with Bill Golden CEO, IntelligenceCareers.com
Question:
I´ve recently read your Front Door piece.
I was turned onto your website by a friend. I am interested in finding my way into Intelligence, but I am uncertain what my odds are.
My Father worked in the State Department and I have lived overseas half of my life. I currently live overseas and am a fluent Spanish speaker and have my undergraduate in Political Science. I work in a major consulting firm which I find challenging but am looking for the next level. I don’t have a security clearance and am 26, so I won´t be entering the military at this point.
I would greatly appreciate any advice you could share.
Answer:
In some ways you are on the right track, but an alternate track: working in a consulting services firm.
Not serving in the military probably decreases your chances by about 70%; we find that most folks that go on to later serve within the intelligence industry ~ if it requires a security clearance ~ get their first security clearance via military service.
At age 26 you are hardly too old. There are plenty enough folks entering the military at that age.
About your alternate track: I encourage you to take a competitive intelligence outlook on all that you do. You should also consider joining an organization such as Strategic and Competitive Intelligence Professionals.
Consulting services firms such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte, and many others often find themselves involved in unique situations where their services portfolio trends towards competitive intelligence, economic analysis at the regional level, and/or national security.
I’ve attached a presentation from the University of Indiana that gives a very good overview of competitive intelligence as a career field.
Also, you may want to consider going for your master degree and going to the RIGHT school ~ that would be a school that participates in the National Intelligence (ODNI) IC Centers of Academic Excellence (CAE) program … there are more than 50 universities that participate. There are many doors through these programs // not front doors but doors do exist as the faculty have a relationship with the many agencies that cosponsor their programs.
Best regards, Bill Golden CEO, IntelligenceCareers.com USADefenseIndustryJobs.com USAJobZoo.com

2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival ~ April 28~29, 2012, Washington DC
Science Jobs | Engineering Jobs
For the past year and a half I have been organizing the 2nd USA Science & Engineering Festival – the country’s largest celebration of science and engineering – a FUN, entertaining, educational and FREE event.
So why have a Science Festival? Society gets what it celebrates! As a culture, we celebrate movie stars, rock stars and athletes and we generate a lot of them…but we don’t celebrate science and engineering. If our country does not turn around the interest of young people in science, we will have outsourced innovation.
The Festival has kicked off this week with our Nifty Fifty Program, and will continue with over 150 FREE events for the public and Greater Washington, DC schools leading up to the Finale Expo – all geared toward sparking an interest in Science and Engineering.
You can find out all the details at: http://www.usasciencefestival.org
The grand finale will be a two day EXPO at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. on April 28-29, 2012 – over 3,000 fun, hands-on, interactive activities and 150 stage shows for all ages. There will be stuff for the mildly curious to the science professional. You can learn about fun topics like the science of the magic of Harry Potter, the mathematics of jump roping, the physics of superheroes, the chemistry of Thanksgiving Dinner, the engineering of baseball bats and balls, the science behind special effects in movies, trends in Global Warming, renewable energy sources of the future.
You can operate state-of-the-art robots, laugh with science comedians, be mesmerized by science magicians and mathemagicians, converse with astronauts, Nobel Laureates, storm chasers, science celebrities like Bill Nye the Science Guy, cast members of the MythBusters, Big Bang Theory and NCIS, and even scientists of the past, fly a fighter jet simulator, enter a virtual reality environment, be a CSI agent, learn how to transform your car so it can run off a cuisinart….and you can get info about scholarships, internships, mentorship and future jobs.
I would greatly appreciate if you would pass this email on to your contact list.
Many, many thanks for your help. I hope to see you at the Finale Expo on April 28-29!

New Villanova University Business Intelligence Program Provides Professionals With Must~Have Skills and Industry Certification ~ 100% Online
TAMPA, FL/PRNewswire/ ~ Increasing global competition, volatile economic conditions and unprecedented quantities of data have made business intelligence crucial to a company’s success. With the new online Master Certificate in Business Intelligence from U.S. News-ranked Villanova University, professionals can gain vital skills employers seek, expanding their expertise in data architecture, analysis, modeling, measurement and more.
Knowledge of this in-demand discipline can also lead to new opportunities, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2010-11 Occupational Outlook Handbook projecting employment of systems and database administrators to increase 30% through 2018. Other professionals can benefit from business intelligence knowledge as well. For project managers to marketing researchers, business intelligence answers critical questions, such as:
~ Which regions perform, and where can I improve?
~ What products are selling, and which are failing?
~ Why am I losing money, and how can I make more?
Students engaging in Villanova’s new Master Certificate in Business Intelligence online will take three courses: Essentials of Business Intelligence, Mastering Data Management and Technology, and Advanced Data Architecture and Intelligence. Upon successful completion of the courses, which include a certification exam and project, students will be recognized as a Certified Professional in Business Intelligence (CPBI).
“While business intelligence has been part of the corporate vernacular for decades, the solutions were used mainly by large organizations,” says Sid Ghatak, Villanova faculty and consultant. “Today, from financial firms to fast food franchises, companies both big and small are using business intelligence to improve financial and operational performance. There’s no better time to get business intelligence certification and take your knowledge to new levels.”
As with Villanova’s other master certificate programs, students will be immersed in a 100% online video-based e-learning environment, interacting with faculty and classmates through live chat and discussion boards.
